TASK 2 : VISUAL ANALYSIS
◉ Task 2: Visual Analysis
This task requires us to assess, investigate, document and analyze the existing art/design work we selected in Task 1. I will study the design principles found in that work, as well as the size, placement, purpose, effectiveness of the design in relation to the UNSDG goal that I have chosen.
" What is Visual Analysis? " 👀🖼️
Visual analysis is a critical part of visual literacy, a skill that helps people read and critically interpret images, whether in a museum, on social media, in entertainment, advertising, or the news.
Based on www.orleanshousegallery.org, The core purpose of visual analysis is to recognize and understand the visual choices the artist made in creating the artwork. The result of a close visual analysis is the better understanding what exactly the viewer is looking at and what the artist intended to convey.
" How does Visual Analysis work? " 🤔🔨
Visual analysis can include three phases.
- Phase 1: Observation
- Phase 2: Analysis
- Phase 3: Interpretation
Phase 1 : Observation
Observation means closely looking at and identifying the
visual elements of a design, trying to describe them
carefully and accurately in your own words. Do not read
beforehand about the design at all.
Phase 2 : Analysis
Analysis requires you to think about your observations
and try to make statements about the work based on the
evidence of your observations. Think about how the specific visual elements that you’ve
identified combine to create design principles that
complete that work of design/art, and the effects on the
viewer.
Phase 3 : Interpretation
In this final phase, your observations, description, and analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work (and in some cases the designer) and historical context that you find in trustworthy published sources.
I went to Taylor's Library at 24/2/2024 and searched for a book regarding the topic 'Gender Equality'. I decided to read and chose this book as my Further Reading reference.
-Gendered Resistance: Feminist Resistance Politics
"These moves produce and maintain crises of representation, insecurity, and sustainability, despite some re-positioning of some women and men on the world stage. Re-positionings, such as those moves that give some women greater access to the means of destruction and more men less access to the means of production, are more the result of the deepening and widening of militarization and economic globalization than of justice-inspired gender equality commitments and policies." (Page 231)
-Women and Social Movements:
Women are found in large numbers in social movements for peace, human rights, economic justice, and environmental protection as members of both mixed organizations (which include men and women) and separate organizations (which are women-centered in terms of leadership, focus, and membership, and thus are referred to as women's movements.) ◈ 28 Feb 2024 (Week 4) :
Ms. Yip JinChi takes a look at my blog and said that I have a wonderful idea and understanding for the Phase 3 Interpretation. She also helped me fixed some of my sentences for Phase 1 & 2, and advised me to add some more words to it.
Ms. Yip JinChi uploaded the link of submission for Task 2 in the google classroom, and we're asked to submit the task when completed.
Throughout the Task 2, I learned on how to Visually analyze artworks and train my observation, analyzing and interpretation skills. I have also studied the design principles and learn the effectiveness of the design related to the UNSDG goal that I chose (which is no.5).
