 PROJECT 2 : Field Study

and FINAL ART WORK

◉ Project 2: Field Study

The students are required to collect visual, oral, textual, and tactile artefacts that would be part of their research materials for the ideation in Project 1 (proposal). All collected artifacts and materials must be recorded, kept, and documented, accompanied by necessary information such as the type of artifact and material, its purpose, its symbolism, its cultural/historical background, and more, depending on the kind of artifact and material.

Data Collection Methods
Some of the methods by which you can collect data:

Observation study.
We went to National Textiles Museum for on-site observation. We took many photos at this museum.
Google drive for the photos we got:

Interview of relevant stakeholders (from the lecture series, you may approach any of the guest speakers for an interview, if you deem their presentation useful for further research).

We went to Ang Eng Boutique to do an interview with a local Malaysian or artisan who is knowledgeable regarding Nyonya Kebaya. We also got permission to explore and observe the boutique.

Online and/or actual physical material visual research of the selected culture (the people/arts/symbols/architecture/text/calligraphy etc.)

We did a survey through google form about the kebaya usage and knowledge.

◉ Final Project

> IDEA

Our group decided to make an E-Magazine as our Final Artwork, With all things related to the beautiful and elegant Nyonya Kebaya, and discover how to incorporate it into your wardrobe for an effortlessly stylish and sophisticated look.

Our fashion magazine uses illustrations instead of photography. We see this as our selling point of the magazine because fashion magazine with illustrations are more commonly found in older magazines and we want to be one of the view to bring that back.

For instance, Vogue mostly uses illustrations in their older designs. From this, we are also inspired to use a vintage style layout for the magazine as it complements Nyonya Kebaya while also contrasting the modern aspects that we want to emphasize on our magazine.

> RATIONALE

"Vogue Kebaya" is a cultural movement that aims to revive the classic elegance of Nyonya Kebaya, not only a fashion magazine. "Vogue Kebaya" shines as a light of cultural sensitivity in a time when traditional clothing is becoming less and less fashionable, honoring the rich history and exquisite craftsmanship of this famous item.

Through the lens of our magazine, we aim to present Nyonya Kebaya to the younger generation, highlighting its cultural relevance and historical significance. Our goal is to promote young generation to apply Nyonya Kebaya to their own way of showing their identity and personality through striking images and gripping storytelling.

"Vogue Kebaya" is rooted in a strong dedication to cultural awareness. We understand how crucial it is to preserve and honor traditional clothing in the rich diversity of international fashion. Through presenting Nyonya Kebaya in a modern setting while respecting its traditional heritage, we respectfully and gracefully bridge the gap between tradition and modernity. In addition to celebrating fashion,

"Vogue Kebaya" fosters tolerance and respect for various customs by acting as a catalyst for cross-cultural communication.
