TASK 3 : DESIGN
◉ Task 3: Design
After analyzing the design of our choice in Task 2, We will now produce a work of design, inspired/influenced by the one we had analyzed, or as a reaction to it. We should also apply our knowledge of design principles in our creation. We may use any medium and/or materials that are suitable to convey our visual message. Direct use of photographs is not permitted.
In the Task 3 Design post in the blog, include:
1. a recap of Task 3 brief
2. some visual references (cite the sources) that inspire our own ideas
3. 3-5 sketches (manual/digital) of our own ideas
4. final design in A4 size, JPEG
5. a rationale, in about 150-200 words, explaining/defending the decisions made in our design, the meaning/purpose of the design and the design principles that are found in the design.
6. feedback from the lecturer.

- Visual References -
According to https://bootcamp.uxdesign.cc/, Reference is a source that a designer uses while working on project to find better design solutions. In visual design it could be any image. With references, we can find original ideas and styles, and also understand what we want to see as a final product. A visual reference is a picture of a person, place, or thing that an artist can refer to while drawing to ensure that they're portraying something accurately. Visual references are essential for any creative project, especially for design. They can help you explore different themes and colors.
We can use visual references, such as images, sketches, mood boards, or style guides, that illustrate our design goals and preferences. Here are some of my Visual references:

As seen in my first sketch design, 2 display boxes are hanging on a hook/shelf (where objects are displayed in shops). One of the display boxes is blue, which identifies as 'Men' and the other one is pink, which identifies as 'Women'. It has a figure of Men and Women inside.
In this world full of businesses and politics, it's not surprising that Men lead everything and are always front, outshining most Women who are always left behind, kept hidden and silent. This relates to my sketch idea, where I convey that the world sees Men as the first priority, especially in terms of business and the economic world. Men are likely to be chosen first rather than Women. This is why my design shows that the Women's display box is hanging at the back of the shelf, foreshadowing in the darkness.

For my second sketch, I drew a donut. I colored the donut as Pink (Women) and Blue (Men). I divided both of the colors equally, Because that’s what gender equality is about. Gender equality means that men and women have equal power and equal opportunities for financial independence, education, and personal development. So both sides needs to have equal sizes.

In my third sketch, I’m trying to convey the inequality side. As seen on the sketch, I divided it into 2 sides. One side for Women and the other side for Men, with different perspective.
In this world, Men usually are able to achieve their goals first rather than Women. I illustrate Men going up using an elevator while Women needs to use the stairs/ladder in order to reach the top.
- Sketches 4 -

On my fourth sketch, it is quite similar to the second sketch but it’s more detailed.
It represents the word “Gender Equality” by conveying a Popcorn bucket which is divided into 2 colors (Black & Red). The color of the bucket represents Men and Women. The point is, Men and Women can be different from the outside, but from the inside (the popcorn) we are all the same human beings.
I also drew a sketch of Men and Women figure behind the popcorn. Both figures have the same bow tie, just different positions (Men wears bow tie on the neck, while Women wears it on the head as a ribbon bow). To complete the look, I added mustache on the head of the Men figure. When we double the mustache and mirrored it, it could turn into a lips shape, and I think it’s perfect to complete the Women’s look.
• Art Work Process
After thinking quite some time, I have finally decided to choose sketch no. 4.
I used Adobe Photoshop through all the process of making my final art work. Here are the brief process on how I made it:
Part 1 (The popcorn bucket)
Fig 1.0 Process 1
First of all, I created the base shape of the popcorn bucket
using the Shape builder tool > Round Rectangle.
Then, I used the Pen tool and Curve tool to adjust it’s shape.
Fig 1.1 Process 2
I proceed to add colors into the popcorn bucket shape,
by adding Layer style > Color overlay, and chose the colors.
Fig 1.2 Process 3
Started to color in the background temporarily, in order to see
the colors for the popcorn bucket more clearly
I added a bunch of random circles on top of the popcorn bucket
using the Shape builder tool > Circle, to create shape of popcorns.
I chose the color light yellow to fill it in.
Fig 1.3 Process 4
I created another layer and duplicate a bunch of more circles for
an effect of the popcorn shade.

Fig 1.4 Process 5
I made a new layer for the dark-yellow shading of the popcorn bucket.
and now the bucket’s done.
Part 2 (The Women and Men)
Fig 2.0 Process 6
I strated inserting a figure of Men and Women.
Fig 2.1 Process 7
I changed the color of the Men figure into Red by
adding Layer style > Color overlay > Eye-dropper tool and click on
the same shade of Red on the popcorn bucket.
Fig 2.2 Process 8
I used the Shape builder tool and chose a shape that looks like an arrow.
Duplicated the arrow shape and mirror it horizontally.
Then select those 2 arrows, Group layer > Convert into smart object.
Now it has turned into a bow tie shape. I duplicate the layer and change it’s color
by adding Layer style > Color overlay and chose the same shade of Red,
and then I positioned it on top of the Women figure as a ribbon bow.
Fig 2.3 Process 9
I added a mustache shape for the Men figure. Then I duplicate it,
and turned it’s color into red.
Fig 2.4 Process 10
I adjust the size smaller and duplicate the red mustache layer.
I mirror it and combine both layers. Now it turned into a shape of lips.
Fig 2.5 Process 11
Inserting some dark-red shading shading into the illustration.
Part 3 (Background and details)
Fig 3.0 Process 12
I chose the same exact dark-yellow as the popcorn’s shadow
as my illustration’s background.
Fig 3.1 Process 13
I added a black straight line exactly in the middle
to convey the “equality”.
Fig 3.2 Process 14
I inserted a Text layer and wrote in the caption: “gender equality now.”
Fig 3.3 Process 15
Finally, I did some minor changes and It’s done :)
• Art Work Result :
Fig 1. Gender Equality art work Result (JPG version)
- About the art work -I chose UNSDG no.5 which is Gender Equality.
•What is Gender Equality?
Gender equality means that the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of individuals will not depend on whether they are male or female, handicapped or able bodied, young or elderly, white or black, or from rural or urban settings.
UNICEF defined gender equality as "women and men, and girls and boys, enjoy the same rights, resources, opportunities and protections.”
•Why did I choose this topic for my art work?
In my perspective, I chose gender equality because this topic is interesting and I felt that I wanted to explore more about this topic. In fact, gender equality is important, because it prevents violence against women and girls. It also makes our communities safer, healthier, and it’s essential for economic prosperity.
•Explaination of the art work:
Similar words for Gender Equality are: Gender equity, Equal opportunity, Fair treatment, or Fairness, Equal rights, Social justice and Non-discrimination.
I design an artwork from sketch which conveys an equality between men and women. In the design, I created an illustration of popcorn, which means that although men and women have different covers or looks from the outside (Black side Men & Red side Women) just like the bucket, Both men and women are still equal human beings, reflecting the popcorns inside of the bucket. We could also take an egg for an example. Even though eggs have different types and colors from the outside, those eggs are the same from the inside.
I also created an illustration of men and women behind the popcorn bucket. The man figure has a bowtie on his neck and that bowtie is equal to the women’s ribbon bow on her head. Another thing is an illustration of mustache on the men’s figure. Fun fact, the women’s lips are equal to double the men’s mustache. So the overall objective of gender equality, is a society in which women and men enjoy the same opportunities, right and obligations and all spheres of life.
•Design Principles that are found in the art work:
1. Principle of similarity.
2. Law of symmetry and order.
3. Balance.
4. Repetition.
5. Unity.
I visited Taylor’s library and found a book called “Design For Communication - Conceptual Graphic Design Basics” by Elizabeth Resnick. I decided to read it and use it as my further reading section.

“Graphic design is the intersection between art and communication. Having come of age at a time when the computer was introduced and subsequently embraced as a radical new design tool and solution, I and other designers of my generation are seeing it now dominate almost every aspect of design. Design is fundamentally idea oriented, and designers carry profound influence in their power to shape and communicate cultural concepts. The future of design lies as much in this active and critical role within the society as it does in the further development of technology. Graphic design is the art of visualizing ideas, activating space, intuiting proportion. It is the result of meticulous attention to detail. Good graphic design prompts the viewer to meditate, often unconsciously on potent word/image combinations. Good graphic design is always memorable.” —Phillippe Apeloig

General Feedback:
Ms Yip JinChi showed us some of the senior’s previous art works as an example, to give us a preview on how we should do the Task 3.
Ms Yip JinChi said to the class, in order of doing the Task 3, we shouldn’t stick on to only 1 idea. But instead, we must elaborate different ideas/sketches and make the progress of creating the artwork.
•What have I learnt in this module?
I’ve learned so much throughout studying this module. I learned the different types of designed principles.
•What did I enjoy the most?
I enjoyed Creating my own sketch ideas, Making the final artwork regarding the UNSDG goal that I chose and Determining the design principles.
•What did I not enjoy the most?
Sometimes I’m confused on analyzing to decide principles that are conveyed inside of an artwork. But overall, it is fun to learn.
•What have I learnt about myself through this module?
Throughout this module, I’ve learned that I needed a lot of inspirations and references in order to determine my artwork ideas, and I love exploring different types of artwork, according to the design principles.
•What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
My perspective on artworks have changed since I learned a lot about the design principles. Now I know which artwork contained emphasis, balance, harmony, unity, or even Gastalt theory.
•What could be improved in this module?
In my opinion, there is nothing to be improved within this module. The module is perfect.
